Eagles to open track season

The Chadron State College men's and women's track and field team will open the indoor season Friday and Saturday when around 60 Eagle athletes will participate in a meet hosted by Black Hills State.

Six men and three women will compete in multi events beginning Friday. The men's heptathlon will conclude Saturday morning. The regular track meet will take place Saturday afternoon and evening.

Four teams are expected to compete besides Chadron State and Black Hills.

CSC coach Ryan Baily the Eagles have had good workouts this fall and he believes they will have another exciting season.

The roster includes several conference champions from last year, but one of them, Cody Hunt, who won the shot put title both indoors and outdoors, has expended his indoor eligibility.

Baily said Steven Richendifer, who won the pole vault at both conference meets last season as a sophomore, may redshirt this year. But the coach said CSC will still be strong in the vault because Skyler Hoopes of Lusk, Wyo., will compete after redshirting a year ago.

Baily believes the CSC men should be competitive in every event with the possible exception of the high jump. He added that while the Eagles are improving in the distances with the addition of cross country, they probably aren't quite ready to score many points in the longer races at big meets.

The coach also believes that Lanar Newman, a senior from Jamaica, is back at full strength after battling injuries the last couple of years. Newman was the conference's indoor hurdles champion in 2010 and has long jumped 24-3 ¾, second best on CSC's all-time list.

Two of the most prominent members of the women's team the past three years, sprinter Monique Fair and distance runner Ashley Riesen, may redshirt this season.

Baily said Fair is still bothered by an injury that caused her to miss the 2011 outdoor season and Riesen may forego at least one of the 2013 seasons in order to prolong her college career. Both Riesen and the coach believe her career could be enhanced if she experiences another cross country season.

The coach is predicting great things from the women's throwers, who are led by Gordon-Rushville product Alyssa Norton, and now includes freshman Mel Hurl, a Colorado State Meet shot put champion last May.
