Chadron State College Athletics

2017—Herl redshirted in 2016 and spent many hours on her strength and form, focusing on being one of the nation’s top throwers this season.  The results from two meets in December 2016 were gratifying. She threw 21.36 meters, or 70 feet, 1 inches at the Black Hills Holiday Classic and then hit 71-10 at the Colorado Mines Alumni Meet.  The latter mark is the fourth best all-time for a Division II thrower.  
2015—She wrapped up an exceptional season, earning All-American by placing fourth in the discus at the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Championships with a mark of 170 feet even to break the school record of 165-8 that she’d set while winning the event at the Loper Invitational Meet at Kearney on April 4. She also won the discus at the RMAC Meet at 161-8, and was second in the shot put at 46-3 ½ and third in the hammer at 170-3, her season-best and sixth best all-time at CSC.  Her shot put best of 49-3 ¾ is second only to Jacqueline Wells’ school record of 52-1.  During the RMAC Indoor Meet, she was second in the weight throw with a season-best 61-2 ¼ and third in the shot at 45-2 ½. Her shot best was 45-9 ¾. She also was first-team RMAC Academic both indoors and outdoors.
2014—Placed fourth in the shot at 43-9 and fifth in the weight at 52-10 ¼ at the RMAC Indoor Meet and had bests of 44-8 and 54-4 ½.  She struggled at the RMAC Outdoor Meet, placing seventh in the shot at 42-11 and eighth in the discus at 134-3. Her outdoor bests were 44-7 ¾ in the shot, 154-6 in the discus and 157-1 in the hammer.
2013—As a freshman, she was fourth in both the shot at 44-8 ¾ and weight 50-8 at the RMAC Indoor Meet and was second in both the shot at 44-11 ½ and discus at 146-1 at the conference’s Outdoor Meet. Both shot put marks were season bests. Her other bests were 52-0 in the weight and 146-4 in the discus.
Before Chadron State: As a senior at Eaton High, Mel won the Class 3A shot at the Colorado State Meet at 43-2 and also sailed the discus 144-11. Her high school coach was Mandy Kubo Chubb, a RMAC shot and discus champion and a two-time All-American in the shot for the Eagles in 2000 and 2001.
