Josh Schommer was a dynamic wrestler who filled the Eagles’ 157-pound weight class four straight years and finished his career with 104 victories.

He had an outstanding sophomore season, when he placed at every tournament, including fifth at the National Tournament to earn All-American honors.

Schommer won 40 matches that season, still the Chadron State record.

After that season, there was a target on Schommer’s back and opponents were well aware of his abilities.

As a junior, he was fourth at the Cowboy Open and third at both the Nebraska-Kearney and Midwest Classic Tournament while finishing with at 25-14. His senior year he had a 24-12 record, was first at the Fort Hays Open, second at the Midwest Classic and the runner-up at the West Regional Tourney to qualify for nationals again.

Both of Josh’s parents, Jerry and Sandy (Mathis), were Chadron natives. His younger brother Joel was a standout of CSC’s national-ranked football teams in 2006-08.

Josh is a partner in Wahoo Lockers, a federally-inspected meat packing plant in Wahoo, Nebraska.

His longtime girlfriend, Rachel Kennan of Valentine, also attended Chadron State and is a behavioral analyst who works with autistic children.
