Playing as a true freshman in 1996, perhaps no Chadron State football player ever has started his career faster than Mike Fackrell. He rushed for more than 100 yards in each of the Eagles’ first four games and concluded that season rushing for 1,264 yards and 14 touchdowns and added 14 pass receptions for 232 yards and another TD. He was the first CSC underclassman to rush for 1,000 yards and was the RMAC Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference.
He was going strong again the next season when he suffered a broken ankle in the third game against Mesa State. Fackrell returned as a junior and shared the tailback duties with Anthony Simmons his final two seasons. For his career, he rushed 508 times for 2,394 yards (4.7 average) and 19 touchdowns and caught 46 passes for 740 yards and 4 TDs. He was Second Team All-RMAC as both junior and a senior, when he missed a portion of the season with a knee injury. He was an All-Nebraska choice as a freshman and a junior.
After graduating in 2000, he worked as a civil designer and surveyor until accepting an industrial education teaching position in 2010 at the middle school in Evanston, Wyoming, his hometown. He is Evanston’s head freshman football coach and also coaches the throwers for the high school track team. He has two children, Connor and Brenna. His father, Kay, and his brother, Pat, also were fine football players for the Eagles.
