Now the secretary for the Parks and Recreation Department in her hometown of Grand Island, Patty Buettner undoubtedly deserved the Hall of Fame honor long ago.
Softball was discontinued at Chadron State for 25 years following her senior season in 1982 and her feats were largely forgotten until CSC sports information director Alex Helmbrecht was compiling a list of Eagles’ all-time best performances last spring.
He discovered that Buettner’s accomplishments were exceptional
For instance, her .368 career batting average (112 hits in 304 at bats) is Chadron State’s best. Her .448 batting average and the 47 runs that she scored as a senior also remain single season school records. So are the 13 bases that she stole as a freshman in 1979.
For her career, Buettner had 56 runs batted in, 18 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs and she struck out just 15 times while drawing 29 walks.
She admits she was surprised when she received the letter notifying her of the induction this fall. She said she hadn’t thought much about the Hall of Fame, but noted that she had a rewarding softball career both at CSC and afterwards.
She continued to play fast-pitch softball for several years and was a member of the 1983 state championship team that advanced to the national tournament in California.
She then played women’s slow pitch through 2005. She also was involved in Grand Island’s summer youth softball program as either a coach or an umpire for 28 years before retiring in 2010.
