Watson was on the receiving end of many of Turman’s passes from 1967-70 and was a threat to score every time he touched the ball. He intercepted eight passes in 1968 while playing in the secondary. The next two years, he primarily played offense. He concluded his career with 96 receptions for 1,792 yards and 15 touchdowns. As a senior, he ranked eighth nationally among NAIA receivers with 56 catches for 978 yards and 10th in punt returns with 10 for 206 yards.
Against Kearney State in 1970, Watson set a school record for most all-purpose yards (319) that stood for 19 years. In that game, caught 11 passes for 182 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown reception that at the time was a school record, scored on a 34-yard run with a reverse and returned three punts for 79 yards and a kickoff for 24 yards. He also lost a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown when a teammate committed a clip long after Watson had broken into the clear.
At the end of his senior year, Watson owned nine CSC football records. He was an all-district and honorable mention All-American choice that season. His brother, George, earned similar honors that season at Hastings College and has been a criminal justice professor at CSC since 1976.
After earning his master’s degree at CSC in 1977, Watson has been on the faculty at North Bend High School, including about 25 years as the activities director.
