He toppled regional No. 6 Bruno Nicoletti of Colorado Mesa in a 7-2 decision on Thursday, clinching the match on a four-point nearfall with 1:22 on the clock in the third period as CSC slipped by CMU on the tiebreaker. On Friday, he scored two upsets. The first came on a third-period pin against nationally-ranked No. 9 Nolan Kistler of Cal Baptist. That six-point victory pushed Chadron State over the top against No. 12-ranked CBU. Later, Helmick wrested a 9-7 decision from Central Oklahoma's Miguel Barreras, who has a No. 4 regional ranking. Finally he notched a 16-0 tech fall over Fort Hays State's Micquille Robinson, as the Eagles pummeled the No. 18-ranked Tigers 32-10. CSC went 3-1 against four teams appearing in the D2Wrestle.com coaches poll.
