Skyhawks withstand Eagles

Box Score CHADRON – Fort Lewis College's Ashley Wells had 19 kills and 18 digs to lead the Skyhawks to a 19-25, 25-19, 29-27, 25-23 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Chadron State Saturday afternoon.
 
Like Friday's match at Colorado Mesa, the Eagles played Fort Lewis, another West Division foe, tough. There were 26 ties and 10 lead changes
 
Stephani Sonka added 12 kills and Kristin Stephan chipped in 10 more to help Fort Lewis improve to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
 
Erika Roybal and Mollie Jones each had double doubles for Chadron State (3-14, 1-7 RMAC), but the Skyhawks' finished with 18 total blocks to escape with the win.
 
Roybal and Jones each had 11 kills to lead the Eagles' offense and double digit digs – Roybal had 13 and Jones finished with 10 – while Mallory Irvine added eight kills and four blocks.
 
The Eagles actually posted a higher hitting percentage than Fort Lewis – .121 compared to .112 – but the Skyhawks finished with three more kills and took advantage of their blocks.
 
Also for Chadron State, Jessica Jester and Kelcey Christian each finished with six kills and Justine Ackie had 14 set assists and 10 digs.
 
Defensively, Ashley Bargen had 13 digs while playing libero.
