Eagles fall twice at Northern State tourney

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Chadron State College volleyball team had a tough start to its season Friday at the Northern State University Tournament.

The Eagles fell to Northern State in the day's opening match (25-17, 25-19, 25-20) and followed with a 4-set loss to Missouri Western (25-19, 19-25, 25-14, 25-23) in the finale.

CSC will play Black Hills State and Minot State Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

In the Eagles' first match, Northern State ran an efficient offense, tallying a hitting percentage of .265 for the match, while limiting the Eagles to .101.

Drew Smith had 37 set assists and three Northern attackers had at least 11 kills en route to their three-set victory. Kaleinani Kabalis finished with a match-high 16 kills, Kelsey Chambers had 12 and Jussy Tuscherer finished with 11.

Mallory Irvine paced the Eagles with eight kills and a .467 hitting percentage, while freshman setter Justine Ackie had 13 assists.

The Eagles' defense at the net was strong. Irvine had four block assists and five others had at least block.

Chadron State straightened out its offense against Missouri Western but the Griffons had six players register at least six kills, led by Sarah Faubel's match-high 16.

The Eagles hit .145 and three attackers had at least nine kills. Jessica Jester and Mollie Jones each led CSC with 12 kills apiece and Erika Roybal added nine more.

Both Roybal and Jones also led CSC defensively with 18 digs.

Michaela Schmitt had a team-high 19 set assists, while Ackie finished with 18.
