CHADRON – After going 1-3 at the Northern State Tournament in Aberdeen, S.D., last weekend, the Chadron State College volleyball team will play four matches this weekend in a tourney hosted by Black Hills State at Spearfish, S.D.
The first of those matches will be against Minot State of North Dakota, the team the Eagles defeated in the Northern State Tourney. The match is set for 1 p.m. Friday.
Minot also went 1-3 at Aberdeen. The Beavers' victory was over Black Hills State, one of the teams that slipped past CSC. Minot improved its record to 2-3 on Tuesday night by sweeping past Valley City State on the road.
The Eagles' second match in the Black Hills State tourney will be against Briar Cliff College of Sioux City, Iowa, at 5 p.m. Friday.
The Chargers, who are affiliated with the NAIA, were 3-3 after going 1-3 in a tournament at Bellevue College last weekend. They beat Friends University, but lost to two more Kansas teams, Baker University and Kansas Wesleyan, and also fell to Grand View College of Iowa.
Earlier, Briar Cliff had defeated Dakota State and York College.
On Saturday, the Eagles will play the University of Mary at 11 a.m. and Augustana University at 3 p.m.
Mary opened its season by going 0-3 at the Upper Iowa Tournament last weekend. The Marauders were swept by Lake Superior State of Michigan and Upper Iowa, and lost to South Dakota Mines 3-2.
Mary had a 2-28 record last season.
Augustana will likely be CSC's toughest opponent this weekend. The Vikings will be playing much closer to home than they did last weekend when they participated in the Vulcan Classic hosted by Hawaii-Hilo and came away with a 3-1 record.
Augustana swept the host Hilo team twice and also won three sets to zero over the University of British Columbia. But Nebraska-Kearney, the No. 2 ranked team in the NCAA Division II this week, beat the Vikings 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 26-24).
Among the Vikings' standouts are 6-foot-3 Holly Hafemayer and 6-2 Jordan Spatenka. Both had at least 322 kills last season, when Augustana had a 16-12 record. Hafemayer also had 99 blocks. She had 16 kills in the match against UNK.
Chadron State coach Janel Baily said her team did some good things in its opening matches, but has room for improvement. She said the Eagles' blocking and digging were good, but unforced errors and failure to communicate were troublesome at times.
After playing in the Black Hills State Tourney, the Eagles will open their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season by visiting Metro State and Regis in Denver on Sept. 14 and 15.
