SAN ANGELO, Texas – Chadron State made the most of its scoring opportunities and came up with four turnovers Saturday afternoon while defeating Angelo State 19-7 in a non-conference football game.

The Eagles, now 1-1 on the season, drove 51 and 56 yards in the second period while building a 13-0 halftime lead, saw Angelo State score midway in the third period, but soon recovered a Rams' fumble and converted it into a touchdown.

Chadron State recovered two more Angelo State fumbles in the fourth quarter when it had the ball 12 minutes.

A year ago in Chadron, the Rams scored four times in the final period to edge the Eagles, 49-42.

“We started kind of slow today, but finally got going and had a great effort,” said Jay Long following his first victory as the Eagles' head coach. “Getting those turnovers was huge and I'm really happy that we didn't have any turnovers. 

“Then we were able to eat up the clock in the fourth quarter with our running game. I thought we played good, hard-nosed football, the kind we want to play.”

Angelo State out-yarded the Eagles 85 to 23 in the first period, but CSC cornerback Conor Casey intercepted a pass at the Eagles' 12-yard line to stop the Rams' main scoring threat.

The Eagles scored with seven minutes left in the second period when quarterback Jonn McLain went the final two yards after tailback Glen Clinton had raced 51 yards on a statue of liberty draw play that turned out to be the game's longest gain.

Although the extra point failed, Chadron State scored again just before halftime when McLain hit wide receiver Allan Schmaltz with a 12-yard pass in the end zone. Passes of nine yards to Travis Reeves and 22 yards to Chapman Ham preceded the touchdown toss. Alex Ferdinand kicked the extra point.

Angelo State drove 74 yards in nine plays for its touchdown, which came with 7:46 left in the third period. The march included passes for 25 and 12 yards from quarterback Blake Hamlin to wide receiver Dakarai Pecikonis before Hamlin hit C.J. Akins with a 25-yard strike in the end zone. Jarred Martin booted the PAT.

The Eagles were forced to punt on their ensuing possession but Angelo State fumbled the ball during the return and CSC made the recovery at the Rams' 42.

Clinton, who was the game's leading rusher with 17 carries for 117 yards, had runs of 15 and 10 yards in the ensuing seven-play drive before going the final two yards for the touchdown with 1:42 left in the third frame.

Angelo State drove 73 yards on its first possession of the fourth quarter but fumbled the ball at the Chadron State 5-yard line when safety Trelan Taylor jarred it away from tailback Jeremie Calhoun and linebacker Kevin Lindholm made the recovery.

Following the turnover, the Eagles burned 8 minutes and 27 seconds off the clock before finally turning the ball over on downs.

The Rams completed three passes in the next minute, but fumbled the ball away after the third reception and Casey made the recovery at midfield. This time CSC owned the ball for more than three minutes.

Hamlin was able to launch six passes in the game's final minute, but he completed just one.

Angelo State finished with 304 total net yards compared to the Eagles' 277. McLain completed 13 of 21 passes for 93 yards; Hamlin completed 20 of 33 for 170. Calhoun led the Rams in rushing with 24 carries for 91 yards.

Lindholm participated in 11 tackles while fellow linebackers Dylan Furrier and Shea Koch had nine and eight, respectively, for the Eagles.
