Billings holds on to edge CSC women, 59-55

Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. — Montana State-Billings staved off a late rally by Chadron State to edge the Eagles 59-55 in a non-conference women's basketball game here Saturday night.

The Yellowjackets led the entire game, but saw their seemingly comfortable 53-41 lead disintegrate to the final four points down the stretch, when Chadron State outscored them 14-6 in the last seven minutes.

A pair of 3-pointers by Dallas Shaw and three 2-point goals by Kattie Ranta sparked the Eagles' late rally that had the Billings' fans squirming. Two of Ranta's baskets came in the final 10 seconds.

The Yellowjackets put together what proved to be the winning surge late in the first half, when they outscored the Eagles 11-2 in the final 4:04 to take a 35-23 intermission lead. Billings pushed the margin to 14 points four times in the second half, but the Eagles' late flurry allowed them to nearly catch up.

Bobbi Knudsen, a 5-foot-8 senior, led the Yellowjackets with 23 points while Chelsea Banis was the team's only other double-figure scorer with 10.

Ranta paced the Eagles with 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Another CSC senior, Kayli Rageth, tallied 16 points for the third time in three games and Shaw added 12 points, all on 3-pointers.

Both teams sank 23 field goals, and the Eagles made six treys, twice Billings' total. However, the hosts were 10-17 from the free throw line while Chadron State was 3-3.

CSC will host South Dakota Mines at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first half of a double-header with the Hardrockers' teams.
