Big first half lifts Lopers over Eagles

Box Score KEARNEY, Neb. – Connor Beranek scored 24 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead the University of Nebraksa-Kearney men's basketball team to an 88-60 non-conference victory over Chadron State during a Sunday matinee.
 
The Lopers, now 2-2, jumped out of the gate to take a 45-20 lead at intermission and never looked back en route to their victory.
 
Zac Bargen led Chadron State with 19 points and eight rebounds. Grant Stone added 10 points and five boards and Josiah Lee and Justyn Anderson each finished with nine points.
 
In the pivotal first half, UNK shot 41.7 percent from the field (15-36) but the Eagles had a hard time getting their offense going, making just four of 29 field goals.
 
Chadron State (3-1) shot better in the second half, connecting on 41 percent of its shots, but the Lopers sank over 55 percent and scored 22 points in the point to keep the Eagles at bay.
 
For the game, Chadron State made 16 of 58 attempts from the field (27.6 percent), while UNK made 31 of 65 (47.7 percent). The Lopers also shot better from the charity stripe, hitting 19 of 27 attempts compared to 23 of 36 for CSC.
 
The Eagles did win the turnover battle, 17-16. Lee led all players with four steals.
 
In addition to Beranek's 24 points and 11 rebounds, UNK's Kendal Glidden scored 15 and Tyler Shields added 13.
