CSC women defeat Colorado Mines, 68-59

Box Score CHADRON — Senior forward Kattie Ranta scored 22 points and collected 14 rebounds Saturday night while leading the Chadron State College women's basketball team to its first victory in seven starts this season, a 68-59 decision over Colorado School of Mines.

Even though both teams got off to a slow start offensively, Ranta had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the first seven minutes of the game, giving her a double-double in the sixth straight game this season. She continued to build on both totals and got outstanding help from teammate Kayli Rageth, who was scoreless the first 13 minutes of the game, but had 15 points by halftime and finished with 18.

The Eagles led 38-21 at halftime. Two jumpers by Ranta quickly gave the Eagles a two-to-one margin, but the Orediggers outscored CSC 20-4 in the next eight minutes to cut the difference to just 46-41.

Mines never got closer and Chadron State staved off three straight 3-pointers by the visitors by making nine of 11 free throws in the final minute.

Courtney Gallo, a 5-foot-8 senior, was the Orediggers' only double-figure scorer with 23 points. Her shooting included five of 13 from behind the arc.

Both teams shot right at 33 percent from the field after both had missed their first 10 field goal shots. The Eagles went 23-31 from the free throw line while Mines was eight of 14.

The Eagles will return to action at 2 p.m. today (Sunday) by hosting Colorado Christian, while Mines will play at the same time against Black Hills State in Spearfish.
