Free throws lift Cougars over Eagles

Box Score CHADRON – Colorado Christian's Kyle Weaver sank 16 of 17 free throws and three others joined him in double figures as the Cougars earned a hard-fought 71-67 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Chadron State Sunday afternoon at Armstrong Gymnasium.

Weaver, a senior guard from Phoenix, made 16 consecutive free throws, including seven of eight in the final two minutes, to finish with a game-high 18 points. In the Cougars' double overtime win at Black Hills State Saturday, Weaver made 18 of 19 from the charity stripe.

Avery Redmond added 17 points, including three 3-pointers, Michael Brown scored 13 and Andrew Squiers chipped in 11. Also for CCU, now 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the RMAC, Tony Black hauled in a game-high nine rebounds and added five points.

Ten Chadron State College (4-4, 1-3 RMAC) players scored but the Eagles committed 21 turnovers, including 13 in the first half, and allowed Colorado Christian to shoot 37 free throws. The Cougars made 30 of them, while CSC hit just 12 of 15.

Chadron State's top scorers both came off the bench. Grant Stone led the Eagles with 15 and Christopher Smith finished with 13.

Also for Chadron State, Evan Brooks scored nine, Chris Taylor had six points and eight boards and David Downey nailed two treys to finish with six points.

Both teams shot over 40 percent from the field – the Eagles hit 23 of 57 (40.4 percent) and the Cougars made 18 of 42 (42.9) – and the lead changed hands seven times. Neither team led by more than nine points, though, and once Colorado Christian took a 42-40 lead after a pair of Weaver free throws with 10:45 to play, the Cougars led the remainder of the way.

Chadron State will host Regis and Metro State Friday and Saturday in Chadron.
