Downey leads CSC men in win

Box Score CHADRON – David Downey scored a career-high 17 points and the Chadron State men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in its 67-61 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Regis Friday at Armstrong Gymnasium.

Thanks to its sixth-straight win over Regis, Chadron State improves to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the league. The Eagles will host sixth-ranked Metro State tonight (Saturday) in another conference clash.

Downey and Zac Bargen, who scored 12 points, were the only Eagles who reached double figures but the CSC bench chipped in 36 points and 11 players scored.

Chadron State never lost its lead but the Rangers, now 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the RMAC, kept it close down the stretch after trailing by as many as 13 points early in the second half. The Rangers made the game a one-possession affair a couple of times late in the game but the Eagles always answered with a bucket.

CSC, which shot over 46 percent from the field for the game, also sank five of its last six free throws in the final two minutes to put the game away.

The Eagles shot well from long range, hitting seven of 18 3-point attempts. Downey had three of them and Evan Brooks, who scored eight, nailed two treys.

Also for Chadron State, Kendrick Holliman scored seven points and grabbed a team-high six boards and point guards Josiah Lee and Devin Crear combined to dish out seven assists.

Mike MacKelvie and Spenser Reeb both scored 13 points to lead Regis. The Rangers made 21 of 56 shots (37.5 percent) and 12 of 19 from the foul line.
