Late jumper gives Western State victory over CSC

Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State's Jade McIntosh sank a jumper with nine seconds to play as the Mountaineers withstood a furious Chadron State rally in their 79-77 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday.
 
The Eagles trailed Western State by as many as 16 points early in the second half but CSC continued to whittle down the lead, eventually owning a 76-73 advantage with 1:20 to play after Dallas Shaw connected on a 3-pointer.
 
However, Western State responded with a layup from Desiree Smith, who finished with a game-high 27 points, and McIntosh added another bucket in the final minute to earn the win.
 
Chadron State, now 0-6, played well in defeat. The Eagles trailed Western State 63-53 with nine and a minutes to play but they outscored the Mountaineers 24-16 until the final buzzer. The Eagles started their late scoring surge when Kattie Ranta, who scored 22 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds, netted six straight points.
 
During that scoring skein, Hattie Guzman also hit a 3-pointer and Kayli Rageth, who scored a career-high 25 points, sank two foul shots to tie things up at 66-66. Neither team owned a lead bigger than three points the rest of the game.
 
Both teams shot well for the game. Chadron State hit 22 of 55 (40 percent), while Western State made 29 of 70 (41 percent).
