Yellow Jackets trump Eagles

Box Score CHADRON – Black Hills State's Amy O'Neill had 20 kills and Caitlin Templeton added 13 more as the Yellow Jackets earned a gritty 27-29, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over Chadron State College Tuesday at Armstrong Gymnasium.

Black Hills State (5-5, 1-2 RMAC) hit .138 as a team, while Chadron State (3-8, 0-3 RMAC) connected on .106 percent.

The match was close throughout – there were 20 ties in the four sets and 13 lead changes – but the Yellow Jackets took advantage of 12 CSC service errors and relied on the hitting duo of O'Neill and Templeton.

Despite the setback, Chadron State had several bright spots. Nikki Schmidt nearly had a triple double – she finished with nine kills, 25 set assists and 17 digs – and Barbie DeCent had a team-high 11 kills.

Also playing well for Chadron State were first-year players Alia Brennan and Hanna Flaming. Brennan, a freshman from Chadron, had eight kills and assisted on three blocks, while Flaming, a junior college transfer, had eight kills.

Also for CSC, Jessica Jester had seven kills and five block assists and libero Brittany Oddo had 17 digs.

The Eagles will host the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday in another RMAC match. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
