UCCS turns back CSC in four sets

Box Score CHADRON – Jornan Banich had 18 kills and three others had at least 13 kills as the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs defeated Chadron State in four spirited sets (25-21, 29-27, 24-26, 25-17) Saturday at Armstrong Gymnasium.
 
Banich hit .298 to lead a four-headed attack for the Mountain Lions. Kristen Sciacca added 14 kills and Emily Whitelaw and Kim Catlett each had 13 more as the Mountain Lions improved to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
As a team, the Mountain Lions hit .251, while serving six aces.
 
The Eagles, who fall to 3-9 and 0-4 in the conference, played well. They hit .158 as a team and had five players finish with at least eight kills. Erika Roybal led CSC with 12 but she received plenty of help. Alia Brennan, Jessica Jester, Hanna Flaming and Barbie DeCent each finished with eight kills. Brennan also had a team-high four blocks.
 
During the Eagles' recent homestand several of the games have been tight and Saturday's match was no exception. In all, there were 19 ties and nine lead changes.
 
Brittany Oddo paced the CSC defense with a team-high 18 digs, while Nikki Schmidt added 14 more and 24 set assists.
 
Also for CSC, Justine Ackie had 19 set assists and seven digs.
