Mavs halt Eagles’ winning streak

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The 18th-ranked Colorado Mesa University wrestling team won its final five matches and snapped Chadron State College's nine-match winning streak in the process Thursday by securing a 21-19 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory.

With the win, Mesa improves to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Chadron State, which will compete at Western State tonight (Friday), falls to 9-4 and 3-1 in the RMAC.

The Eagles gave the Mavericks all they could handle during Thursday's clash. Dylan Fors claimed a forfeit victory after opening the dual at 184 pounds and sixth-ranked Jordan DeBus, who was wrestling up a weight, dispatched Paco Retana with a 6-2 decision at 197.

Following a Mesa decision at heavyweight, Chadron State responded with two emphatic wins. Taylor Summers cruised to a 9-0 major decision at 125 over Erick Vargas and No. 3 Dustin Stodola improved to 20-0 this season after he pinned Jonathon Stelling in the second period.

However, Mesa coasted in the final five matches, including a major decision and a technical fall, to clinch its victory.
