A wrestling triangular involving the Hastings Broncos and the 16th-ranked Augustana Vikings on Saturday will be the final event on the Chadron State College campus prior to Christmas.
Â
The competition will begin at noon in the Nelson Physical Activity Center as the wrestling team celebrates community night. All tickets to the triangular cost $2. The Eagles will open the action at noon against Hastings. The Broncos will meet Augustana at about 1:45, followed by the dual between CSC and the Vikings.
Â
After toppling Northern State 34-6 last week, the Eagles have a 3-2 dual record.Â
Â
Alliance native Mike Schadwinkel, who wrestled at Adams State in the late 1990s, became the Hastings coach this year. He had previously led Grand Island High to five straight Class A state championships. Four of his former Islanders, including three who transferred from Nebraska-Kearney, are on the Broncos' roster.
Â
Augustana is 16th in the NCAA Division II rankings. The Vikings' leader is TJ North, who is rated No. 1 at 125 pounds after finishing second at last year's national tournament. He had a 33-4 record last season.
Â
Augustana's 197-pounder, senior Jayd Docken of Winner, South Dakota, is ranked fifth nationally but is not listed on the Vikings' projected starters.
Â
A pair of sophomores have been the Eagles' winningest wrestlers this season. Both
Taylor Summers at 133 pounds and
Jacob Anderson at 149 have 13-4 records. Another sophomore,
Caleb Copeland, is 10-7 at 174 pounds.Â
Â
Josh Miller at 141, CJ Clark at 157 and heavyweight
Jake Weber have won one more match than they have lost.
