Chadron State gets first win of the season

BILLINGS – Chadron State College's volleyball team got its first win Saturday morning in a three-set sweep of the University of Mary. The Eagles won 25-21, 25-23 and 28-26. In the second match, the Eagles fell to Black Hills State University in four sets 25-20, 24-26, 25-20, 28-26.

The Eagles were led by Erika Roybal and Lelalelei Nomura as both finished the day with 24 kills and three blocks each. Mariah Conyers was the distributor for the day, finishing with a combined 72 assists.

Also for the Eagles, Brittany Oddo finished with 31 digs, while Ashlyn Hanson added 12 kills and 24 digs.

Against the University of Mary the Eagles never faltered, leading by as many as 12 points. Nomura led the Eagles with 12 kills and Conyers had 23 match assists.

Mary's Allison Adams tried her best to make it a match, putting down 13 kills with a hitting percentage of .440, but the Eagles came together with seven team blocks.

In the final match of the tournament, CSC fought to the end with conference rivals BHSU, coming up short in four sets. Despite the loss the Eagles played well, with six players having at least six kills, led by Roybal's 18.

Chadron also defended well. Six Eagles had double-digit digs, led by Oddo and Nomura's 15. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles couldn't hold back BHSU's heavy hitters Meghan Sipe, 14 kills, Holly Hamlin, 10 kills and Danielle Torpey, 9 kills. Hamlin also contributed a match high six blocks.

CSC travels across the country to St. Petersburg, Florida, next weekend to compete in the Eckerd Classic.
