CHADRON, Neb. - October 17, 2015 - After a promising start to the game for the Eagles (3-4, 2-3 RMAC), Colorado State University-Pueblo football
(6-1, 5-0 RMAC) rattled off 48 straight points on seven touchdowns to roll past Chadron State 48-10 today at Elliott Field.
CSU-Pueblo did most of its damage with their rushing attack, finishing the game with 452 yards, out of a total of 629, on the ground. Brothers Bernard and Cameron McDondle piled up 207 yards and 158 yards, respectively, on 28 carries combined. Wide receiver Kieran Duncan added 51 yards on two attempts, and quarterback AJ Thompson scrambled for 40.
Things looked hopeful for the Eagles in the first quarter. CSC held the ball for 10:01 out of the first 15 minutes, getting out to a 10-0 lead.
On their opening drive, Chadron State began moving the ball in chunks, quickly gaining three first downs to get into CSU-Pueblo territory, where a false start followed by two incompletions forced them to settle for a field goal.
Alex Ferdinand delivered, knocking through his longest make of the season from 43 yards.
After a three-and-out by the ThunderWolves, CSC again started moving the chains. Three carries by
Derek Jackson for 13 yards, and four catches by
Danny O'Boyle for a total of 64 yards raised the intensity in Don Beebe Stadium. O'Boyle's last reception found the endzone from 25 yards out, and the Eagles were up 10-0.
After one quarter, CSU-Pueblo was held to just 30 yards of total offense. Running back Cameron McDondle had only seven rushing yards on four tries, and quarterback Thompson was 2-of-5 passing.
The momentum shifted for good in the second quarter. CSU-Pueblo got on the board at 14:02 in the second with a three-yard touchdown run, set up by an end-around by Duncan that went for 34 yards.
Two CSC drives stalled on penalties, and O'Boyle,
their leading receiver at the time, went out of the game, further deflating the Eagles.
CSU-Pueblo capitalized, with Cameron McDondle ripping off the longest play of the day for the ThunderWolves, racing 77 yards for a touchdown. CSC trailed 13-10 at the half.
After halftime, the McDondle show continued with younger brother Bernard taking over the game. He had 199 of his 207 rushing yards in the second half, scoring the last three touchdowns of the game on runs of 66, 10, and 67 yards. Cameron McDondle finished with four scores.
Chadron State was unable to answer, picking up only two first downs in the third quarter and punting on six straight possessions after going ahead in the first quarter. Two fourth-quarter drives finally reached the red zone, but the Eagles were forced to turn the ball over on downs.
On the plus side, the Eagle passing game showed signs of improvement, with
Matt Vinson throwing for 291 yards, a season-high for CSC quarterbacks. Seven passes went to freshman
Max Gray for a game-high 91 yards, his personal best.
DeAndre Barthwell led Chadron State with eight tackles.
The Eagles hope to find better success next week when they visit Spearfish, South Dakota to match up against Black Hills State, whom CSC has defeated in 12 straight contests back to 1987.
