CSC volleyball faces tough tests

CHADRON, Neb. - October 30, 2015 - Chadron State College volleyball is on the road this weekend, in what may be the toughest weekend of volleyball on their conference schedule.

The Eagles, two matches out of playoff contention behind Adams State University and Western State Colorado University, visit two of the conference's powerhouses in a pair of RMAC matches. They will travel down to Colorado Springs for a 7 p.m. contest at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs tonight, before tangling with the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners on Saturday at 4 p.m.

CSC's Friday night opponent, UCCS (15-7, 10-3 RMAC) is part of a five-way logjam for second place in the conference. They enter the weekend with an opportunity to clinch a conference tournament berth with two wins. Starring for the Mountain Lions is outside hitter Kim Catlett, who leads the RMAC in kills per set by a wide margin and is eighth nationally with 4.35 per set.  Catlett was also named the conference's Academic Player of the Year recently. The match Friday night in Colorado Springs will honor cancer survivors and benefit friends of the UCCS program fighting cancer.

On Saturday, the Eagles face MSU Denver, who is also in a five-way tie for second in the RMAC. The Roadrunners come into the weekend on the heels of a 3-0 sweep of No. 18 Colorado School of Mines. No stranger to tough competition, MSU Denver has played seven of their 23 matches this season against teams currently ranked or receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, including No. 1 Ferris State and No. 3 Concordia St. Paul. They feature a gang of top hitters, with junior Michaela Smith averaging the third most kills per set in the RMAC (3.78) in addition to Vasati Fiatoa and Ryan Hoerdemann holding the top two hitting percentages in the conference. They are hitting .366 and .315, respectively, on the year.

The Eagles visited both opponents last year and came home winless. CSC's last win over UCCS was November 8, 2013 in Colorado Springs. Their last win over the Roadrunners was September 17, 2004 in Denver.

CSC can only get into the RMAC Tournament with losses by Western State, Adams State, and Colorado Christian at some point down the stretch. A couple of upsets this weekend would be very favorable in the event of any ties.
