Rangers lasso Eagles, 3-0

CHADRON, Neb. -- November 14, 2015 -- Chadron State volleyball ended its season Saturday night at Chicoine Center, falling to the Regis University Rangers 3-0.

The official attendance was reported as 619, making it the largest home crowd the program has seen in over 11 years. The last time CSC volleyball attracted over 600 fans was September 24, 2004. On that date the Eagles hosted the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney, then ranked No. 1 in the nation, who regularly draw in excess of 1,000 observers to their own home matches.

On Senior Night, graduating outside hitter Lelalelei Nomura led the Eagles with 14 kills, with only two errors, for a .400 hitting percentage. She added an assisted block for a team-high 14.5 total points.

Junior Rudy Leasau had the only double-double of the game with 10 kills and 11 digs. She had two block assists.

The Eagles were led on defense by Sina Mauga, who led with three blocks, all assisted, and Sierra Winkle, who managed her best per set output of the season with 5.7 digs per session.

Setter Madison Webb had another solid showing with 32 assists.

The Rangers' Katie Klein had a stellar performance hitting for 18 kills with only four errors, good for a rate of .400.

Chadron State trailed in the first set from beginning to end, with the Rangers winning 25-16 on their best hitting of the night.

The Eagles led for most of set two, gaining a their largest advantage of four points midway through. They never trailed by more than two, but still came up short as Klein had eight of her 18 kills in that middle round.

Set three was the biggest nailbiter, with 11 ties and five lead changes between the teams. Again the Eagles led for the majority of the frame, getting 16 of their 38 total kills. And again they never trailed by more than two. But they couldn't close the deal falling in a flurry of great hitting between the two squads.

"I'm extremely proud of how we came together as a team this season," said coaching assistant Whitney Roth after the match. "Our seniors have been great the entire season and their leadership has been instrumental in our success."

Chadron State's eight conference wins, and nine wins overall this season, are the program's best since 2007. They will expect to return five of seven players who started a majority of matches this season, plus three additional letterwinners.
