Eagles drop heartbreaker in New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Chadron State College's softball team fell victim to strong late hitting in two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchups against CSU-Pueblo and the Western New Mexico University Saturday in Silver City, New Mexico. The Eagles play each team again Sunday.

Chadron State (0-14, 0-2 RMAC) started off its day leading against CSU-Pueblo (6-8, 2-0 RMAC), 2-0, after a solo trip around the bases for Courtney Lecher, who had four hits in four at bats, in the first inning and a double in the second to bring Shea Graham home.

CSC held its lead until the fourth inning when CSUP's pitcher Madison Wolfe hit a grand slam to take the lead, 5-3. Another home run by catcher Kennedy Smith raised the score to 7-3 after five innings. The Eagles brought the score within one, 7-6, following a double by Casey Polk, but surrendered three runs in the bottom of the sixth to a three-run home run by Alyssa Ubrun.

In the second game, the Eagles jumped to a quick 10-1 lead through two and a half innings. CSC scored four runs in the first off of doubles by Jessica Eatmon and Aspen Eubanks. In the second CSC scored three, including a two-run home run by Zoe Humphries, her second of the season. In the top of the third, Graham hit a two-run home run to left field, bringing the lead to 10-1.

Western New Mexico (4-9, 1-1 RMAC) found its stride in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs off four walks and two home runs by Stephanie Higgins and Mary Othon. The Mustangs run kept going into the fourth, as seven of eight straight batters hit singles to take the lead, 16-10. WNMU would score two in the bottom of the fifth to run rule CSC, winning 18-10.

Polk led the team with five hits in six at bats on the day, while Lecher went 4-for-8. The Eagles play the Mustangs at 10 a.m. Sunday and the ThunderWolves at noon.
