Eagles fall to Lopers in doubleheader

CHADRON – The University of Nebraska Kearney softball team hit seven home runs en route to two victories over Chadron State College in blustery conditions Tuesday. UNK, now 17-26 this season, won 14-5 and 12-1.

CSC hosts a triangular with Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference leading Metro State University and Colorado Mesa University Saturday and Sunday. The Eagles will play at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. both days. Metro and Mesa will play one another at noon.

Chadron State (13-33) started out well when Jessica Eatmon answered Kate Ruwe's three-run home run with a three-run shot of her own in the bottom of the first inning. However, UNK hit back-to-back home runs in the third innings by Erin Dwyer and Ruwe to push the lead to 8-3. The Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the third when Eatmon and Aspen Eubanks both hit solo homers but UNK got out of the inning. In the fifth, errors plagued CSC as the Lopers scored six unearned runs.

The second game also featured an early 1-1 tie when Eubanks hit her second home run of the day. But UNK continued to scratch runs across and Dwyer hit two home runs and Makenzi Dallas added a grand slam in the fourth to finish off CSC, 12-1.

Eatmon and Eubanks led the Eagles with two home runs each. Eatmon was 2-for-2 from the plate with four RBIs in game one. Eubanks, who took a pitch to the helmet in her first at bat, followed with a home run in each game.

Also for CSC, Bekka Prokaski and Courtney Lecher had one hit apiece.

For UNK, Ruwe stole the show, slamming three home runs in four at bats for six RBIs. Dwyer combined to have six hits, six runs, five RBIs and three home runs in two games.
