CSC women fall to BHSU, 69-54

SPEARFISH, S.D. -- January 9, 2016 -- The Chadron State College women's basketball team (3-10, 3-6 RMAC) got out to a hot start, hitting five of their first eight field goals, however, a second quarter drought allowed the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets (11-2, 8-1 RMAC) to race ahead for a 69-54 victory at Donald E. Young Center.

Four Yellow Jackets scored in double figures, with Christine Thorn and Rachel Erickson each contributing a game-high 16 points, Cheyanne Balster getting 15, and Sierra Toms adding 11.

Maka Daysh, Stephanie Knowles, and Emma Block each scored 13 for the Eagles. Senior Allegria Chisom had four rebounds, two blocked shots, and three steals on defense, to go with four points and a game-high four assists on offense.

The lead toggled back and forth between the two teams in the opening minutes of the game, with five lead changes and three ties a little over five minutes into the first quarter.

Beginning with a Toms three-pointer at the close of the first period, the Jackets then went on a 14-0 run and quickly built a 15 point lead. From there, the BHSU lead hovered around the low double digits for most of the contest.

The Eagles were ahead in turnovers, 17 to 23, however they were outrebounded 52 to 32, as the Black Hills State women won on eight additional second chance points, six fast break points to two, and a slight edge in shooting percentage, 40.3% to 34.4%.

The CSC women will travel to New Mexico this coming week. On Friday they play at 5 p.m. in Las Vegas, New Mexico at New Mexico Highlands University. Saturday will be the last trip they make to Western New Mexico University in Silver City for the foreseeable future, as the Mustangs transition to the Lone Star Conference next season. The game at WNMU is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
