LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- October 29, 2016 -- Chadron State College volleyball looked good on the defensive side of the net, outblocking Colorado Christian nine to six, but the Cougars found the points when they needed to and knocked off the Eagles 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 23-25) at home in Denver Saturday night.
"I'm happy to see us make runs of five or six points here or there," said CSC head volleyball coach
Riann Mullis, "but we're still looking for that consistency we've been talking about all season."
MIdway through the third set, the Eagles played their best volleyball all night.
Alia Brennan and
Rudy Leasau each had a block and a kill, and
Emily Bruce got a service ace, to climb out of an eight-point deficit and cut the Cougars' lead to 22-19.
CCU was able to get match point over the next three plays, but again the Eagles fought, thwarting three straight match points.
It wasn't enough, however, as CCU's Sophia Proano fired a kill across the court to claim the win.
"
Alia Brennan played phenomenal for us tonight," said Mullis. "She has really upped her game in the last half of the season."
In the absence of the injured blocker
Kenzie Chrisman, middle hitter Brennan led both teams with two solo blocks and three block assists.
Brennan and Leasau each finished with 11 kills to lead the Eagles.
Stephanie Wilson also claimed two solo blocks.
CSC falls to 6-17 (5-9 RMAC) and CCU improves to 16-9 (8-6 RMAC).
The Eagles are at home for the rest of the schedule, hosting South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State next weekend. They will see Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines at home in the last weekend of the season.
