UCCS hits late trey to nip CSC women

CHADRON — February 12, 2016 — University of Colorado Colorado Springs freshman Jennah Knafelc sank a 3-pointer with two seconds left in overtime to deal Chadron State an 80-78 heart-breaking loss in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action here Friday night.

Playing without two of their three seniors because of injuries, the Eagles, led 30 of the 45 minutes, including most of the second half.  But UCCS hung around and sent the game into overtime on a layup by Toni Fisher with 19 seconds remaining in regulation.

Chadron State's Kayla Mathews sank two free throws to give the hosts a 78-75 lead with 56 seconds left in overtime. Just nine second later, the Mountain Lions' Tori Fisher also hit a pair of charity shots, cutting the difference to one point.

The Eagles ran the clock down but missed a layup with 16 second left and Fisher grabbed the rebound.  The Mountain Lions also played keep-away until Knafelc hit the winning trey from the right wing.

After the officials put two seconds back on the clock, Chadron State got a final possession. The pass from out of bounds went to center Maka Daysh, but with the 6-foot-2 Fisher defending, Daysh had to shove the ball more than shoot it and could not connect.

Both teams put four players in double figures.

For the Eagles, Erin Graham scored 20, Daysh 10, freshman Keeley Pearce 16 and Mathews 14.  The fifth starter, Allegria Chisom, added nine points.  All five played at least 35 minutes. Daysh led all rebounders with 11.

Gabby Ramirez, a 5-2 senior who sank five of nine 3-point shots, led UCCS with 20 points, Fisher had 16 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds, Brittany Hernandez added 15 and Knaflec 13.

The Eagles, now 7-15 overall and 7-11 in the RMAC, shot 46.6 percent from the field, but were just four of 19 from 3-point range and only 20 of 34 from the free throw line.

The Mountain Lions, 17-7 and 13-5, shot 43 percent from the field, but were 10 of 28 from behind the arc.  They were 10 of 16 at the line.
