CHADRON, Neb. -- March 5, 2016 -- The Chadron State College softball team (11-19-1, 6-4 RMAC) stayed on the plus-side of things today as they opened their home schedule with a win and a loss to Western New Mexico University (11-14, 7-3 RMAC), who ranks among the top teams in the league.
Cierra Cosslett went the distance for her seventh complete game in the eight-inning defensive struggle which began at noon. Despite taking the loss, she allowed only a single earned run and pitched herself out of tricky situations throughout the contest, leaving 11 Mustang runners stranded and striking out eight.
Lacy Granger represented the winning run for the Mustangs, hit home by Clarissa Moreno as the game pushed past regulation into the eighth inning. It was the third extra-inning complete game for Cosslett on the year.
Tayler Hall earned the win for the Eagles in the afternoon battle. She gave up only three hits while striking out seven, including three in the sixth inning alone.
After a couple of wild pitches early gave the Mustangs a first-inning 1-0 lead, CSC's
Katelyn Kruger struck back in the fourth with a leadoff solo homer to tie the game. However it wasn't until the sixth when CSC won the game, on a three-run dinger by newcomer
Kayla Michel.
Lindsey Karlin and
Shea Graham scored on the play.
CSC will return to the diamond for two more doubleheader contests tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m.
