GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- April 28, 2016 -- After a morning weather delay that set the RMAC Tournament back three and a half hours, Chadron State College softball (28-17-1, 21-11 RMAC) got 12 hits in six innings to defeat the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (21-22, 18-19 RMAC) by a 5-1 score here in Grand Junction.
Tayler Hall once again showed why she was the 2016 RMAC Pitcher of the Year, holding the Mountain Lions to a single run and getting four strikeouts with only one walk.
"Tayler did a great job," said CSC head coach Rob Stack. "We struggled just a little out of the gate and that's pretty typical. She has to get her bearings around her and sometimes before she does, she tries to force pitches. The one batter she walked, that's when they scored."
Hits came early and often for the Eagles, with 7 of the 12 total hits going for extra bases.
Courtney Lecher went 3-for-4 and came just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
Lindsey Karlin hit a two-run dinger in the bottom of the third to lead the Eagles with two RBI.
Aspen Eubanks led with two runs scored, both coming after hitting a double.
Katelyn Kruger also finished with a couple of two-basers.
Defensively, the Eagles played well. They did not commit an error, and they turned a 1-6-3 double play to end the top of the fifth.
"Overall it was just a fantastic job," said Stack. "Defense was phenomenal. Everybody but one in the batting order got hits for us. We faced their pitchers over the course of last weekend and I think that helped us. We were hot offensively and I think that comes from being rested and relaxed. Overall we made solid contact and the ball was just flying. We weren't just getting bloop hits, they were some shots."
The Eagles continue in the tourney tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Eagles will face No. 2 MSU Denver, who defeated CSU-Pueblo 7-1 today.
"The thing about the tournament is, everybody has their A-game ready to go," said Stack. "It's been about six weeks since the Pueblo pod where we faced CSU-Pueblo and MSU Denver. All three of us have different teams."
