CHADRON, Neb. -- For the fifth time in the past seven years, the foursome made up of Tom Simons of Chadron, his sons Scott and Bret, and Rob Stack, also of Chadron, won the Championship Flight during the Chadron State College Golf Classic played Saturday and Sunday at Ridgeview Country Club south of Chadron.
The winners shot a 66 on Saturday to make it into the Championship Flight by just one stroke, but they chopped 10 strokes off that score on Sunday for a 122 total and a seven-shot victory.
Sunday's 18 holes consisted of one eagle, 15 birdies and two pars. The winners had no eagles, six birdies and 12 pars in the opening round.
"We made just one putt on Saturday when we didn't play very well at all," said Bret Simons. "But things were much better today (Sunday). We made most of our putts and did pretty well. It was a team effort."
The 56-stroke round Sunday matches the best in the tournament's 22-year history.
Second place in the Championship Flight went to a team led by Chadron High School junior-to-be, Alpine Hickstein, with rounds of 64 and 65 for a 129 total. The other team members were Alpine's parents, Rick and Misty, and Rob Wahlstrom.
Her teammates said "she carried us," and noted that her shots were the ones they used when they managed an eagle on a par five hole Saturday.
Alpine, who has a busy schedule this summer while playing in special tournaments across the state, tied for sixth at the Class C State Tournament as a freshman in 2014 and shared second place last fall.
Following a "scorecard playoff" with two other teams, third place in the championship flight went to Dale Williamson of Chadron, his son Jake and son-in-law Derrick Linn, both of Sturgis, and former CSC baseball standout Creighton Miller of North Platte at 131.
The winners of the First Flight were Mark Haynes of Whitney, his daughters Michelle and Kelli, and Theo Donley of Crawford, also with a 131. Their 64 score on Sunday was as good as any team shot during the second round except for the Championship Flight winners.
Still, the First Flight runners-up, a team made up of Mike Lecher, brothers Jake and Jonn McLain and Colby Hartman, was just one stroke back overall, shooting 67 and 65 for a 132 total.
The Second Flight was won by Tracy Shuck and Brad Tyler of Chadron, Shadd Cochran of Bayard and Shelley Anderson of Alliance with a 136. The competition in the flight was tight as three teams had 137 totals.
The Third Flight winners were Kevin Allison and Scott Jeffress of Gillette, Derrick Arndt of Cozad and Tyler Hett of Buffalo, S.D., with a 141.
The team with the tourney's highest score, a 156, was made up of some familiar names—Bruce Schoepner and Tom Sellman of Chadron, native son Larry Gold, now of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Lanny Shelmadine of Alliance. Of all 30 teams, they showed the most improvement from Day 1 to Day 2, a total of eight stokes. They shot an 82 on Saturday and a 74 on Sunday.
