DENVER -- September 17, 2016 -- Chadron State College volleyball pushed the pace on the Roadrunners of MSU Denver Saturday evening, but the host team was too much for the Eagles this time out, as CSC dropped to 1-1 in RMAC play. With the 3-1 win (18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25) the Roadrunners improve to 7-3, 2-0 RMAC.
MSU Denver brought its best in the first set, hitting .333. Their setter, Brandi Torr had assists on 17 of their 25 points.
CSC struggled to match point-for-point in the second set, giving up an early 5-0 run and seeing the MSUD lead grow to 10 at times.Â
In the third set, the Eagles outhit their opponents .306 to .282 and led for 17 points, to extend the match to 2-1. CSC got multiple kills from four different players in the set.
Chadron State gave up four service aces in a tight but decisive fourth set, as the Roadrunners closed things out in four.
Gaby Varela led the Eagles with 19 kills and hit .245 for the match. She also led the team in total blocks with four, and recorded the only solo block of the match. Varela now leads all outside hitters with a .149 season hitting percentage.Â
Rudy Leasau had 17 kills and 10 digs.
Madison Webb's 42 assists push her to 91 for the two-match weekend. Her average of 11.38 per set was fourth-best in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for the opening weekend of league play.
Chadron State opens its home schedule on Friday, September 23, as they host Western State Colorado University at 6 p.m.
