SAN DIEGO -- September 3, 2016 -- After finding some success on Friday, Chadron State College volleyball finished their trip to San Diego on a down note Saturday. The Eagles dropped matches to Western New Mexico 3-1 (29-27, 20-25, 17-25, 20-25) and California Baptist 3-0 (17-25, 14-25, 18-25).
As much optimism as the Eagles had after defeating Point Loma yesterday in straight sets, it appeared evident early in the day that the momentum would carry forward. The CSC squad topped Western New Mexico in the first set of the day, 29-27, and put up some impressive numbers in the process.
Madison Webb's 16 assists in set one set were the catalyst for
Rudy Leasau to rack up six kills with no errors. Leasau hit .462 and
Kenzie Chrisman was right behind with a .429 hitting clip with four kills and one error, to go with a block assist. As a team, CSC hit .256 in the first frame, and much as they did in the win Friday, they held receive errors to a minimum with only two.
Fortune changed for the Eagles in sets two and three, where they rarely led. They controlled the tempo in set four for a brief time before WNMU seized it back, finishing the contest in the fourth.
Chadron State fared no better against Cal Baptist in the evening, when accuracy woes returned to plague the CSC hitters. They finished with an .022 hitting rate, while CBU hit for .374. The Lancers ran away with sets one and two. In the third set the Eagles hung around for most of the frame before losing seven of the last eight points.
A trip to Sioux Falls awaits the Eagles next, where they will match up with some of the Midwest's finest teams in Augustana, Winona State, and Southern Indiana. The competition will be held at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, and CSC's opponents will be comparable in class to the ones they faced in California.
