CHADRON, Neb. -- September 7, 2016 -- After opening the season against some rugged competition in California, things apparently won't get any easier for the Chadron State College volleyball team when it plays in South Dakota this weekend.
Â
The Eagles went 1-3 last weekend during the Seaside Invitational hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. They defeated the hosts, but lost to Saginaw Valley State of Michigan, Western New Mexico and Cal Baptist.Â
Â
This Friday and Saturday, the Eagles will enter the Augustana University Invitational in the luxurious Sanford Pentagon arena in Sioux Falls. All three opponents won all of their matches last weekend during their season-inaugurals.Â
Â
Augustana, which the Eagles will play both Friday and Saturday, defeated Wisconsin-Parkside, Palm Beach Atlantic of Florida, Michigan Tech and Central Washington in their opening action.
Â
CSC's second foe on Friday will be Winona State of Minnesota, which was 5-0 last weekend when it downed three Michigan teams and one each from Wisconsin and West Virginia. Â
The Eagles' final match Saturday will be versus Southern Indiana, which bested Brevard College of North Carolina twice, Valdosta State of Georgia and tourney host Flagler of St. Augustine, Florida.
Â
Both Augustana and Winona State are members of the volleyball-rich Northern Sun Conference. Winona, which reached the championship match in last year's conference tourney, was pegged to finish fourth and Augustana sixth in the conference's preseason poll this season.
Â
Winona State finished 20-10 and Augustana 18-11 a year ago.
Â
The Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles were 21-11 last fall and landed the fifth spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's 2016 preseason balloting.
Â
Chadron State coach
Riann Mullis said her team played well at times last weekend, but lacked the consistency to defeat outstanding opponents. All four of the Eagles' opponents won at least 19 matches a year ago.
Â
"We did some things well, but need to get better," Mullis said. "We'll keep working."Â
A highlight for the Eagles saw sophomore setter
Madison Webb named to the all-tournament team. She handed out 114 sets in the four matches.Â
After the trip to Sioux Falls, the Eagles will launch their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule by playing at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Friday, September 16 and Metropolitan State University of Denver the following day. The Eagles' first two conference opponents went a combined 7-1 in the opening weekend.
