AZTEC, N.M. -- April 29, 2017 -- Chadron State College softball advanced to 27-23 (23-14 RMAC) with a pair of run-rule wins over Fort Lewis College on Saturday. Both CSC starting pitchers tossed three-hitters, and senior Kinsley Mason pitched her first career complete game shutout as the Eagles cruised to an 11-2, six-inning game in the series opener, and concluded the day with a 14-0, five-inning victory.
Mason also matched her career single-game high for strikeouts, with five with no walks.
Jessica Jarecki, winner of game one, had eight punchouts and only one walk.
Lindsey Karlin and
Morgan Wilhelm both went 5-for-6 in the batter's box on Saturday. Karlin's six RBI led the team, while Wilhelm had a team-high five runs scored. Both players drew two walks from opposing pitchers.
Aspen Eubanks singled home pinch-runner
Angelica Maples in the sixth of game one for what would become the winning run after six innings expired. Before that, however, the Eagles scored at least two runs in four of five innings to feed their mounting lead.
The Skyhawks only two runs were earned in the fourth, when two of Jarecki's three hits came against top sluggers Gianna Melaragno and Angelique Elemen. Leading off the inning, Melaragno doubled, and then Elemen, an elite RMAC power-hitter, rocketed one over left center for two runs.
In game two, the Eagles took care of business in the first inning, pounding out six hits and scoring nine runs to go up 9-0. Karlin started things out with an RBI double, and Chadron State cycled through 13 plate appearances to take a commanding lead.
Wilhelm's two-run homer in the fourth increased the CSC lead to 11, and three more runs scored for the Eagles in the fifth on four hits.
CSC needs one more win to lock in the fourth seed for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. The two teams play another doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
