CHADRON, Neb. -- Chadron State volleyball coach
Riann Mullis said her team played "absolutely its worst and its best" last weekend, when it opened its home schedule by hosting Colorado-Colorado Springs and Metro State.
The visiting Mountain Lions swept the Eagles 25-10, 25-15, 25-17 in 65 minutes on Friday night. On Saturday, Chadron State played an impressive set two before ultimately suffering a 3-1 defeat to the Roadrunners, the defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions.
The Eagles took the second set against Metro 25-22 on the strength of 13 kills and only three hitting errors on 27 hits. The Roadrunners won the other sets 25-17, 25-15, 25-16.
Now 3-7 for the season, the Eagles will head to Colorado's high country this weekend. They will meet Western State, which is 1-10 for the season, on Friday night at 7 p.m., and visit Colorado Mesa, 8-2, on Saturday at 4 p.m.
It's hoped that the Eagles' most dangerous hitter,
Gaby Varela, will be available. After standing out during CSC's opening weekend, she's been sidelined by a sprained ankle the last two weekends.
Mullis said her players are working hard to get better. "If we can eliminate some of our hitting errors we'll be in good shape. We've got to become more consistent."
