GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- February 26, 2018 -- Chadron State College softball wrapped up its four-game series at Colorado Mesa University on Monday, with losses of 8-0 and 7-1 to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference power.
The morning game came to an abrupt end in the bottom of the sixth, when CMU's Anne Marie Torres hit a walkoff grand slam, putting across four runs, which were all unearned due to a fielding error which would have provided the third out in the inning. Only one of the eight runs were charged to pitcher
Jessica Jarecki as earned.
In the afternoon contest, the Eagles scored their only run of the day, after Mesa had built a 4-0 lead in the third. At the top of the fifth,
Ellie Owens scored on an
Aspen Eubanks double, but CMU answered in the bottom of the inning with three more runs for the 7-1 final score.
Eubanks went 2-for-2 in the late game with two walks, to lead the Eagles in the batter's box.
Megan Horn received the loss.
McKenzie Surface and Brooke Hodgson each earned a win for the Mavericks.
Chadron State hosts New Mexico Highlands this week. Tentatively, the four games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but a low temperature forecast Sunday could potentially impact the timing and scheduling of the games.
