LUBBOCK, Texas -- February 3, 2018 -- One day after getting 16 runs on 19 hits on opening day, the Chadron State softball team batted 8-for-50 and left 11 runners on base, dropping a pair of games in the Lubbock Softball Classic on day two.

"We kind of beat ourselves today with our opportunities at the plate," said coach Kaley Scearcy. "The girls are obviously disappointed. We can be better than that, and tomorrow we're hoping to be better. The defense didn't produce at times, and it got us into situations we shouldn't have been in."

The Midwestern State University Mustangs came back from a 4-0 deficit in the morning game, putting four runs on the board in the fourth inning, and getting two more across in the seventh to scrape by with the 6-4 win in their final at-bat.

Five of MSU's six runs came on home runs in the fourth and seventh innings, although the three-RBI smash in the fourth was made more potent by a muffed throw from the Eagles. The Mustangs also got an unearned run on errors alone in the fourth.

A two-RBI double by Allie Mason was part of a three-run first inning for the Eagles, who also scored two unearned runs in the contest.

Sophomore Jessica Jarecki took the loss for the Eagles, going to 2-0.

In the day's second outing, sophomore Megan Horn pitched five and two-thirds innings of hitless ball, but the Eagles' bats couldn't get them back into the game after a fast start by the University of Texas Permian Basin, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two walks, a double, and a home run.

Ellie Owens plated the only run for Chadron State, singling home a run in the second inning, where the Eagles had more chances to score than any other. Senior Aspen Eubanks was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Junior Haylee McKeehan received the start, as well as the loss, in her first action of the season, but she came out of the game in the second inning.

Emporia State University awaits CSC in the Eagles' final game of the tournament at 12:30 p.m MT, on Sunday. The Hornets were victorious on Saturday afternoon against 2017 RMAC runner-up Colorado School of Mines, but lost a shootout on Friday to host Lubbock Christian.
