CSC volleyball team to enter Pittsburg State Classic

CHADRON, Neb. -- After dropping their first four matches of the season against tough competition, the Chadron State volleyball team faces more stiff competition this weekend as they enter the PSU Classic in Pittsburg, Kansas.

While going 0-4 at the Lindenwood Challenge last weekend, the Eagles lost to Urbana University, Southern Nazarene, Missouri S&T and the host Lindenwood Lions.

This Friday and Saturday, as the team enters the PSU Classic, the Eagles will face two teams that are undefeated, one team at .500 and another at 1-3.

CSC's first opponent, Christian Brothers University of Tennessee, defeated Maryville of Ohio and Kentucky Wesleyan, before falling to Arkansas-Monticello and this week's tourney host Pittsburg State.

The Eagles second foe on Friday is Pittsburg State, who went 4-0 last weekend, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan, Arkansas-Monticello, Maryville and Christian Brothers University.

On Saturday, the Eagles open with Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Rangers are also 4-0, after downing the University of the Southwest of New Mexico, the University of St. Thomas in Texas, the University of Science of Arts in Oklahoma and Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

Lastly, the team will play the Cameron Aggies. The Aggies found a victory against Union of Tennessee, but fell to Quincy University of Illinois, Mississippi College and Southern Arkansas to start 1-3.

After going 15-18 a year ago, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs only show 11 players on their roster this season.

The Pittsburg State Gorillas bring plenty of experience back from their squad that went 7-24 last season, with five seniors and four juniors on the roster.

Northwestern Oklahoma finished 20-11 last fall while losing in the first round of its conference tourney.

Cameron finished last season 7-22 but the Aggies show eight seniors on their roster this fall.

CSC coach Riann Mullis said the Eagles played well at times last weekend but still have things to work on.

"We need to work on limiting our back to back errors and work on our serve and pass consistency." Mullis said. "Last weekend we went to get better and prepare for conference matches, and we did that. We just have to keep playing together and keep getting more comfortable with each other."

Freshman Aracely Hernandez and junior Ashton Burditt both were named all-tournament team last weekend. Hernandez finished with 36 kills while Burditt recorded 96 digs. Senior setter Madison Webb accounted for 126 assists.

Mullis and assistant coach Paula Okrutna, both alumni of Pittsburg State, will be returning to coach against the Gorillas for the first time in their careers.
