GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – November 16, 2019 – Colorado Mesa University used four pins and a tech fall to outscore Chadron State College on the wrestling mat Saturday evening, 32-17 in Grand Junction.
"They outwrestled us," said CSC Head Wrestling Coach
Brett Hunter. "We can't expect to win duals if we continue to give up pins and tech falls."
The pins for the Mavericks came at 125 pounds, 149, 157, and 174. The 157-pound bout pitted the 10th ranked wrestler in NCAA Division II, Payton Tawater, against CSC's
Chase Clasen, who was ranked preseason No. 5 at 149, but has since moved up a weight class. The lone tech fall for Mesa was at 184.
Chadron State earned victories at four spots in the lineup, with the top honors going to freshman heavyweight
Mason Watt, who pinned his opponent in the second period using four minutes, 15 seconds.
Senior
Tate Allison took his opponent out with a tech fall at 165 pounds, winning 17-2.
Senior
Brandon Kile won a decision at 133, as did sophomore
Joe Ritzen at 141 to tie the match at 6-6 early. The Eagles trailed from there on.
Several underclassmen competed at the Colorado Mesa Open earlier in the day. Most notably,
Preston Renner, a redshirt freshman, placed fourth at the tourney by going 2-2 with a sudden victory loss in the battle for third place.
