DENVER – December 21, 2019 – The MSU Denver Roadrunners women won a turnover battle by 10 on Saturday evening at home, gaining a 15-point advantage out of the exchange. That resulted in a nine-point win over Chadron State College women's basketball in the final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the 2019 calendar year for both teams.
MSU Denver improved to 4-7 (3-2 RMAC) in the win, while CSC fell to 3-11 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Each team went on an 11-2 run in the first quarter. MSU Denver went first, before the Eagles answered by tying the game up at 13 apiece, with 3:43 to play in the period.
CSC briefly led, at 2:41 in the first frame, when sophomore
Bailey Brooks drained a three, assisted by freshman
Jordan Morris, to put her team up 16-15.
The Roadrunners got up by double digits in the second quarter, and they led 39-27 at halftime.
The Eagles lit up the hoop in the third quarter, with six straight field goals falling. The buckets included three-pointers by
Jori Peters,
Melisa Kadic, and
Taryn Foxen, and they nearly erased a 14-point deficit when CSC trailed only 45-43.
However MSU Denver regained its offensive rhythm near the end of the period, and it carried a 59-50 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Both teams played rather evenly in the fourth, despite the Eagles being called for seven fouls to the Roadrunners' two, and the home team held on for a 76-67 win.
CSC committed 18 turnovers, leading to 20 points, versus five points on the home team's eight giveaways.
The Eagles partially made up for their mistakes by hitting 11-of-22 from beyond the three-point arc. Foxen was 4-for-5 and Peters went 2-for-3. The CSC women held the Roadrunners to eight threes on 28 shots, for a percentage of 28.6.
Foxen led all players with 20 points, while Peters had a game-high eight rebounds.
Kadic with 13 points and
Jordan Morris with 10 were the two others who scored in double digits for the Eagles.
For the Roadrunners, Leya Harvey scored 14 and grabbed seven boards to lead her team in both categories, while Jaiden Galloway added 10 points with a game-high seven assists.
Chadron State is back in action January 3, when they play Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado, prior to a trip to Durango to face Fort Lewis College.
