CSC earns Friday sweep in New Mexico

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- March 29, 2019 -- Freshman pitcher Cassidy Horn earned a pair of pitching decisions in her favor, and Haleigh Hoefs provided her with eight RBI and four runs scored in support, as Chadron State College softball defeated New Mexico Highlands University on the road by a 6-4 margin in game one and a 13-1, five-inning game two on Friday.

Horn improved to 3-3 on the season finishing the first contest with three and one third scoreless innings in the circle, and she started the first three innings, also scoreless, of the day's second game. Her 24 opposing batters faced were only .182 for the day at the plate, with only two base hits in each partial game Horn pitched. Sophomore Gabby Russell started game one but was just shy of the four innings needed by a starter to earn the decision.

In game one, the teams were tied through the first two innings at 1-1, and both put across two additional runs in the third to make it 3-3.

In the fourth inning, CSC freshman Britny Davis's solo homer gave the Eagles the go-ahead, and Hoefs hit a two-run shot later in the inning for the winning runs. Hoefs accounted for five of Chadron State's six total runs either batting or running.

Later in the afternoon, Bailey Rominger's leadoff triple started a 12-run third inning for the Eagles, aided by three NMHU fielding errors, three walks, and two wild pitches. Davis and Hoefs each doubled in the offensive onslaught, while freshman Bailey Marvel singled twice. Kayla Michel, Ellie Owens, and Alyssa Geist added base hits as well.

Four more wild pitches and three more walks in the fourth put one more CSC run on the board. The Cowgirls finally crossed home plate once in the fifth, but the run rule was invoked after five.

Marvel was 4-for-7 at the plate with one RBI, one walk and three runs scored. Davis led the team in slugging with six total bases in four at bats, with two bases on balls, for a 1.500 percentage.

CSC resumes play at 11 a.m. on Saturday in another doubleheader, pending weather.
