Softball team wins to climb standings Friday

PUEBLO, Colo. -- April 19, 2019 -- The Chadron State College softball team went 1-1 on Friday at a pod triangular with Fort Lewis College and host CSU-Pueblo. The Eagles won 8-5 over FLC in their first game of the day before Pueblo won on a walkoff in the seventh inning later.

Chadron State moved up two spots in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings with the win, into 11th behind both its opponents this weekend. They will play each team again Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

The Eagles trailed the Skyhawks 2-0 on senior Angelique Elemen's two-run home run in the first, but in the bottom of the inning Fort Lewis committed a pair of errors to give CSC a scoring opportunity. Chadron State's Haleigh Hoefs doubled and an error scored her, then later Bailey Rominger scored a base hit for two RBI, putting CSC up 3-2.

The teams traded runs in the second, with Fort Lewis tying things at 3-3 with two singles and a sac bunt. CSC's Bailey Marvel singled on in the bottom of the inning, and Hoefs batted her in later.

Elemen's second homer of the game, in the third inning, tied the game again at four apiece.

The Eagles got some help in the fourth inning, in the way of three walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch. They put three runs on the board after Rominger singled to load the bases, then Kayla Michel, Ellie Owens, and Rominger each scored on free bases to go up 7-4.

Each team went on to score one more run, with the Skyhawks sending another solo homer over the wall and the Eagles scoring Angelica Maples on a double by Hoefs.

Junior Peyton Propp earned a save in relief of senior Dallas Magnusson, who earned the 8-5 win, in four innings, to improve her record to 2-4. Kelly Decker pitched a complete game for Fort Lewis, falling to 2-11.

Against CSU-Pueblo, Hoefs added another three RBI to her day with a double and a two-run homer, but Pueblo hid Marvel's leadoff triple in the third with a sharp defensive stop at the plate, keeping the Eagles at bay. The ThunderWolves walked off in the bottom of the seventh, with the game tied at 4-4, on a solo shot by Michaela Burpee to end it 5-4.

Hoefs also scored CSC's only other run in the first, after two fielding errors by Pueblo gave CSC a 2-0 lead.

Pueblo tied the game with single runs in the first and fourth innings. The teams both got to four runs in the fifth inning when Hoefs homered and a pair of unearned errors crossed for the ThunderWolves to knot the game up before their winning blow.

Propp (2-7) was charged with the loss for the Eagles, while going the distance against Pueblo. For the day she allowed only three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts, sporting a 2.25 ERA over nine and one-third innings.

The ThunderWolves' Hannah Anderson (2-4) got the win for her team.

CSC can jump both of its opponents to get to ninth in the RMAC standings with a pair of wins Saturday and a Pueblo loss against Fort Lewis.
