CSC splits matches on Saturday

HAYS, Kan. -- September 14, 2019 -- After a 3-1 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State University in the morning, the Chadron State College volleyball team bounced back to defeat Southern Arkansas in straight sets as the Eagles finished up with a 6-2 record Saturday after the Fort Hays State University Fall Tournament.

NWOSU outblocked the Eagles 14 to 7 in the morning match, forcing CSC's hard-earned hitting average back under .200. The Rangers led set one from start to finish, but set two went to 27 points before a winner was decided. The Eagles struck back in the middle of the third set and withstood a six-point run by the Rangers that tied the set at 23 apiece. Chadron State responded with consecutive kills by Chandler Hageman and Shelby Schouten to extend the match at 2-1. However Northwestern was too much for CSC in the fourth, going up 18-9 at one point, before finishing it 25-18.

In the latter match, CSC won 25-21, 25-18, 25-20 as Southern Arkansas committed 22 hitting errors and CSC notched seven service aces. Timmi Keisel and Schouten led the Eagles with seven kills apiece and only one error each. Hageman added four total blocks. Setter Tori Strickbine totaled 25 assists in the win.

Conference play begins next week, as CSC hosts Adams State on Friday, and Fort Lewis College on Saturday.
