Eagles go 1-2 in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- January 10, 2020 -- Chadron State College junior 165-pounder Tate Allison won all three of his bouts on Friday to go 3-0 in wrestling duals at San Francisco State University, as the Eagles won their first matchup and lost their next two to go 1-2 on the day. CSC now sports an overall dual record of 3-7, and falls to 0-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with its loss to the host Gators.

At the heavyweight division, the Eagles were 3-0 as well, with Mason Watt starting the day 2-0 and Eli Hinojosa winning in the third dual match of the series.

CSC's first opponent was Simon Fraser of British Columbia, Canada, which gave up six points in the 125-pound class to a forfeit. Pins by Brandon Kile at 133, Allison at 165, and Wade French at 197, gave the Eagles four, six-point victories, while Chase Clasen at 157 added a major decision for four points. An 8-3 win by decision for Terry Winstead at 184 was the game clincher, and Watt tagged on an additional three points for good measure at 285, making the final score 34-11 in CSC's favor.

The Eagles had a bit more trouble in the afternoon matchup with the No. 25 Gators.

Despite handing CSC its second straight forfeit at 125 and spotting the Eagles six points, the Gators rallied to score three falls and three decisions in the remaining nine weight classes. The hosts didn't lose a bout on the mat until the 165-pound class, where Allison won a 7-0 decision. French again came out on top at 197, although it took him until overtime, and Watt got his second straight decision, but SFSU prevailed 27-15.

Without the luxury of a six-point head start, the Eagles faced No. 15 Minnesota State-Mankato in their final dual. The Mavericks worked in three six-point victories, and an upset over No. 6-ranked French at 197, to pull away with a 27-12 win to end the day. CSC got narrow decisions by Kile, Clasen, Allison, and Hinojosa, but could not overcome a 15-3 start by Mankato.

Allison's third win of the day, versus Mankato, was a 3-2 decision over Logan Saltou, who was previously ranked No. 6 before the holiday break. Allison and Saltou are both unranked as of the beginning of January.

The Eagles will not need to travel as much the rest of the semester as they did en route to California. Four of their seven remaining duals are at home in the Chicoine Center. Two are in Kearney, Nebraska, and one is just over state lines, in Sterling, Colorado. The NCAA Super Regional meet is set for Kearney, and the national tournament this year is just a half-day's drive away, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
