CHADRON, Neb. -- January 18, 2020 -- The Chadron State College wrestling team fell to 1-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling schedule on Saturday evening, while Colorado State University-Pueblo won its first league contest of the season, in a closely contested 22-14 result on the CSC campus in the Chicoine Center.
The match brought surprises on both sides of the ledger, and it pivoted on the final bout of the evening at heavyweight.
At 125 and 133 pounds, the ThunderWolves won close decisions of 6-3 and 3-2, to start with a six team point advantage.
CSC freshman Joseph Taylor, at 141, not only secured his first career dual win, but did so demonstrably, with a 17-6 takedown clinic to take the first bonus point of the match.
However, Pueblo stretched its team lead to 13-4 with another close 5-2 win at 149, as well as a major decision by Isaiah Diggs, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II prior to the midseason break, over No. 10
Chase Clasen.
The Eagles won three of their next four, though, including another major decision by a freshman. This time
Terry Winstead blanked his opponent 10-0 with two takedowns and a four-point nearfall, adding an escape to start the third period and a riding point.
Headed into the 285-pound matchup, Pueblo led 17-14, but CSC freshman
Mason Watt was overcome in the third period with a technical fall to formidable Pueblo sophomore Gavin Nye. With that, the ThunderWolves sealed the victory, and the Eagles fell to 4-8 overall in duals.
The RMACÂ schedule continues Sunday for Chadron State, as it hosts Colorado School of Mines at noon for its third conference dual of the week.Â
