Eagles can't keep pace with Hardrockers

CHADRON, Neb. -- February 14, 2020 -- Led by guard Allec Williams' 33 points, the South Dakota Mines men's basketball team led all the way while defeating Chadron State College 83-58 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest in Rapid City on Friday night.

Already owning a 32-15 halftime lead, the Hardrockers made 21 of 31 field goal shots for 67.7 percent in the second half to maintain control all the way.  They are 14-10 overall, 11-7 in the conference and are now 9-1 on their home court this winter.

The Eagles sank just six of 29 shots from the field for a dismal 20.7 percent in the opening half. They warmed up to 15 of 30 in the second half, but Mines' even hotter shooting kept CSC from threatening.

"We took good shots in the first half, but way too many times the ball was in and back out," CSC Coach Houston Reed said. "We've got to put the ball in the hole."

Williams, a 5-11 senior from Albany, Ga., scored 10 points in the first half and poured in 23 in the second half.  He also tallied 27 points against the Eagles two weeks ago in Chadron, giving him 60 points in the two contests.  He was 15 of 23 from the field Friday night, including two 3-pointers, and made his only free throw.

Sophomore center Mitch Sueker with 12 points and senior forward Jack Fiddler with 11 were the Hardrockers' other double figure scorers. Sueker also had a team-best eight rebounds, while Fiddler made all three of his shots from behind the arc.

Senior guard Michael Sparks with 15 points on six of 12 field goal shooting, including three of six from long range, was the Eagles' only double-digit scorer.

CSC's leading scorer for the season, senior Brian Rodriguez, finished with just six points, but grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds.  Mines still out-rebounded the Eagles 41-29 and outscored the visitors by a whopping 52-6 margin in the paint.

The Eagles, who made a dozen 3-pointers, twice Mines' total, are 3-21 overall and 2-16 in the conference. They will visit Black Hills State in Spearfish on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets topped Metro State Denver 71-56 Friday night and continue to share first place in the RMAC with Dixie State at 15-3.
