OKLAHOMA CITY -- February 16, 2020 -- On the final day of the Edmond Regional Tournament in Oklahoma City, the Northeastern State University RiverHawks dealt a blow to the Eagles' hopes of rising above the .500 mark for the season, winning 2-1 at the campus of Oklahoma Christian University on Sunday. All three runs in the game were scored in extra innings and were the result of international tiebreaker rules.
With no score through seven full innings, runners were placed on second base to begin both the eighth and ninth innings. Each team scored its free baserunner in the eighth inning, and NSU scored its runner in the ninth, after CSC failed to do the same.
The pitching battle was central to the afternoon contest. Both aces held their opponent scoreless for seven full innings. For the RiverHawks, junior Gail Young rang up nine Eagles batters on strikeouts. Chadron State freshman
DeAnna Barrera carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning, when the leadoff batter for NSU swatted a double.
Barrera nearly won the game in the eighth inning, with the Eagles on top 1-0, when she fanned the first two batters up.
With two out and two strikes on the board in the eighth, NSU's Cameron Conrad singled into shallow center field to bring her speedy teammate home from second and send the game to the decisive ninth inning. It was the second and final hit against Barrera all day.
On CSC's turn at bat, the RiverHawks benefited from an interference call on the Eagles'
Allie Mason, and later they tagged Mackenzie Kroll, the placed runner that inning, attempting to take third base.
A sacrifice bunt and a sac fly scored NSU's runner in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Freshman
Addison Spears had the only RBI and the only extra base hit for the Eagles when she doubled in the eighth to score
Bailey Marvel.
Another freshman,
Sloane Quijas, went 1-for-2 with a walk and a sac bunt which advanced Marvel to third in the eighth inning. In addition, both Quijas and junior
Alyx Gragg, who also contributed a sacrifice, were the only two CSC batters not struck out in the game.
Senior
Ellie Owens also batted 1-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt in the seventh.
The Eagles fell to 5-6 overall, while Northeastern improved to 6-2 on the season.
CSC begins its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday, traveling to Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. The Mavericks are 6-4 in non-conference play, with three of the four losses coming in extra innings.
